Fokion I. Kalogera Bequest

Fokion Ioannou Kalogeras, a retired teacher from the village of Ypsilou who had worked in schools in Braila in Romania and on Andros, bequeathed two properties to the Andrion Club in his will: a two-storey house and a shop on G. Embirikos Street in Andros Town, with a view to providing a scholarship for Andriots to study Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agriculture, Chemistry or Advanced Nautical Studies, the recipients to be selected on the basis of a competition judged by a committee. The Club was to announce the staging of the competition when sufficient funds had accumulated in the bequest. The annual income of the bequest was then in the region of 30,000 drachmas, and the bequest would come into operation after 25 years. In the meantime, the bequest would be enjoyed by Kalogeras’ general heir. When the Andrion Club took possession of the bequest, it would not have had the right to sell the properties, but any income derived from them would go towards their maintenance, with the rest being made available for the provision of the scholarship.

The “Fokion Ioannou Kalogeras” Bequest is under the Directorate of Public Welfare Property of the Hellenic Ministry of Finance, with the Board of Directors of the Andrion Club as its administrative committee. Presently, it owns two properties in the Municipality of Athens from which it provides scholarships to students from Andros.
